Engage & Reflect

In this part of the guide, you’ll begin putting some of what you’ve read into practice.

You’ll try this on five walks over the next week. A short worksheet can help you prepare beforehand and reflect afterwards.

You don’t need to speak to anyone or force an interaction to happen. The aim is simply to notice possible openings, choose whether you want to respond, and pay attention to how the experience feels for you and your dog.

How to use the walk worksheet

Before each of your five walks, decide what kind of connection would feel right that day and what you might choose to do if an opportunity arises. Below is a Walk Worksheet that you can use to help with this.

During your walk, remember: Notice → Choose → Engage.

Afterwards, reflect on what you noticed, what you chose to do, how it felt for you and your dog, and anything you might repeat, change or leave behind next time.

Your answers can be brief and you don't need to spend a long time thinking about them. Choosing not to engage still counts as completing the practice.
