About Paws for Connection

What is Paws for Connection?

Paws for Connection is a free, self-guided resource designed to help you notice and make more intentional use of the small opportunities for social connection that can arise while walking your dog. It’s about everyday moments: a smile, a hello, a brief chat or simply becoming a familiar face.

Who is Paws for Connection for?

Paws for Connection was created for adults who live alone, regularly walk a dog, and would welcome a little more everyday social interaction. It isn’t about assuming that living alone is a problem, or that everyone wants to meet more people, it’s simply there for those who feel it might be useful.

How does Paws for Connection work?

The guide takes you through four simple components: Understand, Prepare, Engage & Reflect, and Review & Build. You’ll learn a little about why these everyday interactions can matter, make a plan that works for you and your dog, try it out on your usual walks, and reflect on what, if anything, you’d like to carry forward.

Is Paws for Connection based on research?

Yes. Paws for Connection was developed as part of my MSc dissertation in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. It draws on research showing that social connection is important for wellbeing, alongside evidence that even brief everyday interactions, even with strangers, can support positive affect and a sense of belonging. It also builds on research suggesting that dogs can make social interaction easier by increasing approachability and providing a natural reason to connect.

Using Paws for Connection

How much time does Paws for Connection take?

Paws for Connection is designed to fit around your usual dog walks rather than add lots of extra time. The practice itself is based around five walks over a week, with a little preparation beforehand and a few short reflection questions afterwards.

How much does Paws for Connection cost?

Nothing! Paws for Connection is completely free to use (including all the downloadable worksheets).

Do I have to follow all the steps in Paws for Connection?

No. The components are designed to work together in a natural sequence, but they can also be used individually. You can take what feels useful, adapt it to suit you and your dog, and leave out anything that doesn’t feel relevant.

Do I have to speak to strangers?

No. Paws for Connection is about noticing opportunities and choosing whether, when and how you want to engage. That might mean a smile or nod, saying hello, chatting briefly, or simply recognising a familiar face. There’s no expectation that you should start conversations, and your own comfort, the other person’s cues and your dog’s wellbeing should always come first.

Choice and Suitability

What if I'm introverted or don't want to talk to people?

That’s completely fine. Paws for Connection isn’t about becoming more outgoing or feeling that you should talk to people. You choose whether, when and how you want to engage. For you, connection might be a smile, a nod, recognising a familiar face or simply being a little more aware of the people around you.

What if my dog is reactive or uncomfortable around people or dogs?

Your dog’s wellbeing comes first. Paws for Connection isn’t about putting your dog into situations they find stressful. If your dog is reactive, anxious or less sociable, suitable opportunities may simply look different; perhaps engaging from a greater distance, choosing quieter situations, or focusing on small moments that feel comfortable for both of you.

What if I rarely see other people on my dog walks?

That can happen, and Paws for Connection can’t create opportunities where they aren’t available. You might want to think about whether a different route or time occasionally gives you more chance of seeing familiar people, but only if that works for you and your dog. The guide is about noticing what’s realistically available in your own context

What to Expect

How can Paws for Connection help me?

Paws for Connection is designed to help you notice social opportunities that may already be happening on your dog walks, feel more prepared to respond to them, and learn what kinds of interaction feel worthwhile for you. The aim isn’t simply to have more conversations, but to help you engage more intentionally with everyday opportunities for connection.completely fine.

Will I definitely meet people if I follow Paws for Connection?

No. Paws for Connection can help you notice and respond to opportunities, but it can’t guarantee that those opportunities will be there. Where and when you walk, your dog, your neighbourhood and other people’s receptiveness can all make a difference.

Can Paws for Connection help me make new friends?

Possibly, but that isn’t the main aim. Research suggests that repeated dog-related encounters can sometimes lead to familiarity, acquaintanceship and a stronger sense of community. Friendship may develop too, but even small moments of connection can be worthwhile without needing to become anything more.

How long might it take to feel more connected?

There isn’t a set timeframe, and it will be different for everyone. Paws for Connection includes five walks over a week to give you repeated opportunities to notice, try and reflect. The idea is then to take whatever feels useful from the experience and incorporate it into your everyday dog walks going forward. Feeling more connected may happen quickly, gradually, or not at all. The research doesn’t yet tell us how long brief dog-facilitated interactions need to continue before they lead to a stronger sense of connection or wider wellbeing benefits.
