Why I Created this

I've lived alone for most of my adult life, but I’m fortunate to have lots of small social interactions each day. Most happen while I’m walking my dog, Hudson.

A smile, a hello, a brief chat, or being recognised by someone I see regularly might seem insignificant on its own. Together, these moments form an important part of my everyday social life.

I’ve also noticed that when I pay more attention to these moments, I’m more likely to recognise and respond to similar opportunities. That experience helped inspire this guide.

Hudson can be reactive and is not always comfortable in social situations. Even so, he regularly creates opportunities for me to meet and speak to other people. His needs also remind me that connection should never come at the expense of a dog’s comfort.

My experience with Hudson reflects research showing that dogs can make people seem more approachable, prompt conversation, and help strangers connect.

I developed this guide as my final project for an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology. It brings together research on dogs and everyday social connection, ideas from positive psychology, and what I have learned from life with Hudson.
